Co Loa Relic Site seeks UNESCO World Heritage status
Experts and authorities in Hanoi are working to establish the global outstanding value of the Co Loa Relic Site to support its nomination for the UNESCO World Heritage List. A scientific workshop held on August 12 focused on gathering evidence to complete the summary report for UNESCO, aiming to recognize the site's unique historical and architectural significance.
Co Loa served as the capital of the Au Lac State under An Duong Vuong in the 3rd century BC and was also significant during the 10th-century reign of Ngo Quyen. The site features a massive system of fortifications, unique construction techniques, and an interconnected network of moats. Researchers noted that the site represents a highly advanced ancient civilization in Southeast Asia, characterized by sophisticated bronze casting and a strategic combination of high ground and water systems for defense and transport.
Authorities intend to build a heritage park at the site and are focusing on UNESCO criteria (iii) and (iv) to highlight its role in the formation of early states and the development of the Red River civilization.
