Co-op Group chairwoman Debbie White to step down

Debbie White is stepping down as chairwoman of the Co-op Group. Moni Mannings, a senior independent director, will serve as the interim chairwoman.

White’s departure follows a period of significant leadership turnover at the UK retailer, which operates over 2,300 food stores and 800 funeral homes. The company has seen several high-profile exits recently, including former chief executive Shirine Khoury-Haq in March and managing director Matt Hood earlier this summer. Kate Allum is currently serving as the interim chief executive.

The Co-op has faced various challenges, including a malicious cyber attack last year and internal reports regarding a “toxic” work environment. Additionally, the group is implementing a £200 million cost-cutting plan to manage rising expenses and ensure financial stability. White stated that she is stepping down as she nears the end of her first term and is unable to commit to a further three-year term.
