Co-operative Group completes transfer of Southern Co-op to new subsidiary

The Co-operative Group announced the completion of the transfer of engagements of Southern Co‑op into its wholly‑owned subsidiary, Siena Co‑operative Limited, while Southern Co‑op will continue to trade under its own name. The move follows member approval in May and remains subject to Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) clearance, with the regulator’s decision expected later in 2026 before integration plans proceed.

Southern Co‑op operates 173 food stores, 83 Starbucks coffeehouses, 69 funeral homes, three crematoria, four burial grounds and about 330,000 members. The Co‑operative Group contributes 2,300 food stores, 800 funeral homes, a wholesale business supplying around 8,000 outlets, legal and insurance services and serves roughly seven million members. Interim CEO Kate Allum said the milestone builds on over 300 years of co‑operative heritage, creating a stronger future for members and communities. Southern Co‑op CEO Ben Stimson welcomed the step, highlighting the shared values and the continued support for members, customers and communities.
