Coachella Valley Youth Sports Programs Adapt to Summer Heat

The Desert Recreation District in the Coachella Valley is operating indoor facilities such as basketball courts, indoor tracks and weight rooms to keep children active during the desert's triple‑digit summer temperatures. Staff, including Recreation Specialist Manny Murrijo, say the programs provide a safe environment for fitness, skill development and community building when outdoor activity is unsafe.

At the same time, high‑school football teams in Indio are following new state heat‑safety rules under Assembly Bill 1653. Coaches limit outdoor practice to one hour when temperatures reach 90‑91 °F and cancel sessions above 92 °F. Indio head coach James Dockery stresses early‑morning practices, hydration and monitoring for heat‑related symptoms to avoid cancellations and protect athletes.

Both initiatives illustrate how local organizations are adjusting to extreme heat to maintain youth sports participation and safety throughout the summer.
