Coahuila automotive industry faces major workforce adjustments

The automotive industry in Coahuila, Mexico, is undergoing significant restructuring, resulting in more than 4,000 job losses since 2025. General Motors (GM) has been a primary driver of these adjustments at its Ramos Arizpe complex, accounting for approximately 2,900 affected workers due to shifts in production volumes, reduced demand for electric vehicles, and the conclusion of specific models like the Chevrolet Blazer ICE.

In response to the most recent layoff of approximately 200 workers following the end of Blazer production, the Coahuila Labor Secretariat has activated an accompaniment protocol. Secretary Nazira Zogbi Castro stated that the department is working with GM’s human resources to match worker profiles with new opportunities and is considering an exclusive job fair for those affected.

While the sector has faced challenges from international trade uncertainty and tariff pressures, Luis Alejandro Flores Espinoza, president of IMEF Coahuila Sureste, expressed optimism for a potential industrial recovery. He noted that the regional economy has shown resilience despite macroeconomic fluctuations and the influence of U.S. economic policies. The CTM anticipates that GM may resume hiring between May and June 2027 as new models enter production.
