Coahuila declares rodeo as Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Coahuila State Congress has approved a decree declaring “El Rodeo” as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the State of Coahuila. The initiative, presented by Deputy Guillermo Ruiz Guerra and supported by the “Alianza Coahuila” parliamentary groups, aims to preserve and recognize equestrian traditions passed down through generations.

The decree recognizes rodeo not merely as a sport or spectacle, but as a cultural manifestation involving specific knowledge, practices, and skills related to livestock work, including riding, roping, and breaking horses. These traditions are deeply rooted in the history of northern Mexico and the ranching heritage of the region.

Equestrian events and competitions are held in various municipalities, including Saltillo, Ramos Arizpe, Parras de la Fuente, General Cepeda, San Buenaventura, Castaños, Piedras Negras, and Sabinas. The designation is expected to strengthen regional identity and promote local tourism and economic development.
