Coahuila faces drought, export declines, and administrative issues

Coahuila is facing several regional challenges involving environmental, economic, and administrative issues. According to the National Water Commission (Conagua), the number of municipalities experiencing dryness has increased from 10 to 24, with 23 classified as abnormally dry. This trend occurs despite the summer rainy season.

In the economic sector, sotol exports have dropped by more than 50% in 2026. Producers express uncertainty regarding trade relations between Mexico and the United States, which remains a primary market for the beverage. Additionally, Coparmex Coahuila Sureste has voiced concerns regarding the federal government's growing debt and deficit, advocating for reduced current spending and increased investment in public infrastructure.

Administratively, the Ministry of Finance (SHCP) placed Coahuila on a list of entities that failed to comply with transparency obligations regarding federal participations. The issue stems from a failure to submit specific Excel and PDF documentation to the Federation within the required timeframe following the state's public disclosure of municipal funds.
