Iván Cazarín Molina, CJNG regional operator, arrested in Zapopan

Mexican federal authorities arrested Iván Cazarín Molina, known as ‘El Tanque’, in Zapopan, Jalisco, on October 5. Cazarín Molina is identified as a high-ranking regional operator for the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) and was considered a close associate of the group’s leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, ‘El Mencho’.

The arrest was a coordinated operation involving the Mexican Army, Navy, National Guard, and the Secretariat of Security and Protection of the Citizen (SSPC), supported by intelligence from the National Intelligence Center (CNI) and information shared by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). During the arrest, authorities seized a vehicle, a firearm, and various quantities of drugs.

Cazarín Molina is linked to several serious crimes, including homicide, extortion, kidnapping, money laundering, drug trafficking, and fuel theft. He is specifically accused of participating in a 2015 attack on a Mexican Army helicopter in Villa Purificación, Jalisco, which resulted in nine fatalities. His criminal operations reportedly spanned the states of Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco, and Puebla. In September 2024, the U.S. Department of the Treasury sanctioned him for his role in a fuel theft network that utilized a web of companies to evade taxes and smuggle hydrocarbons.
