Coahuila hosts experts to protect monarch butterfly migratory route

Environmental authorities, academics, and civil organizations met in Coahuila to strengthen conservation strategies for the monarch butterfly's migratory route in Mexico. The seventh meeting of the Working Group for the Monitoring and Conservation of the Migratory Route took place on September 23 and 24 at the Universidad Autónoma Agraria Antonio Narro.

Participants from Coahuila, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Estado de México, and Zacatecas shared experiences regarding the protection of feeding and resting sites, habitat restoration, and the use of native plants. Diana Susana Estens de la Garza, Coahuila's Secretary of Environment, emphasized the necessity of permanent coordination between governments, academic institutions, and civil society to protect the species.

Key organizations involved in the discussions include the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas, WWF Mexico, PROFAUNA, Pronatura Noreste, and the Chipinque Ecological Park. Local success stories, such as the work in the Ejido 20 de Noviembre through Voluntarily Designated Conservation Areas, were highlighted as models for community-focused monitoring and protection.
