Coahuila implements irrigation modernization to improve water efficiency

The government of Coahuila and the National Water Commission (Conagua) are implementing various infrastructure projects to improve water efficiency for the agricultural sector. In the La Laguna region, a joint investment of 15 million pesos is being directed toward six irrigation units, benefiting approximately 60 local producers in municipalities such as San Pedro, Matamoros, and Viesca. These works include installing geomembranes to prevent seepage, converting to drip irrigation systems, and performing electromechanical maintenance on wells.

Across the state, the Coahuila Secretary of Rural Development (SDR) is managing the Hydro-agricultural Program. Following a 2025 investment of 20 million pesos for 20 projects, the state has increased its budget to 34 million pesos for 2026 to fund 27 projects. These initiatives involve canal lining, membrane placement, and irrigation modernization. A notable current project in Zaragoza involves the rehabilitation and lining of the San Ildefonso canal to reduce water loss through a partnership with the private sector.
