Coahuila leaders challenge state government on security and energy
Political tensions are rising in Coahuila as various leaders challenge the state administration on security and energy policy. Federal Deputy Ricardo Mejía Berdeja, representing the Labor Party (PT), has accused state police officers of involvement in criminal activities, including drug trafficking and train robberies. Mejía Berdeja also contested official economic data, claiming the state suffered significant job losses in 2025, contradicting the governor's reports of recent employment growth.
Simultaneously, Evaristo Lenin Pérez Rivera, leader of the Unidad Democrática de Coahuila (UDC), has voiced opposition to the use of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for shale gas exploitation. This stance creates a rift with the state government and the PRI, which are promoting the ‘Gas Coahuila’ project. Pérez Rivera warned that fracking could jeopardize the state's water resources, despite government claims that the project would drive investment and economic activity through the use of treated water.
