Torreón school attack triggers security and mental health response

Following a violent attack on October 1 at General Secondary School No. 13 in Torreón, Coahuila, which resulted in the death of a subdirector and left several others injured, authorities are implementing sweeping security and mental health measures. The Coahuila State Congress has unanimously proposed actions to strengthen school security, investigate the incident thoroughly, and address adolescent mental health.

Governor Manolo Jiménez Salinas announced that state and municipal agencies will coordinate to reinforce violence prevention and socio-emotional support programs. This includes strengthening mental health brigades in secondary and preparatory schools to address addiction prevention and emotional well-being.

In the wake of the tragedy, a separate incident occurred at Federal Secondary School No. 2, where authorities activated security protocols after students posted threatening messages on social media. As a precaution, involved students were sent home to continue classes remotely. Meanwhile, General Secondary School No. 13 has transitioned to distance learning as the community prepares for a gradual, supervised return to the campus. Medical reports indicate that a 13-year-old student injured in the initial attack has successfully undergone reconstructive surgery on his left hand.
