Coahuila to regulate school cell phone use within 180 days

The Coahuila Secretary of Education, Emmanuel Garza Fishburn, announced that the state will establish specific protocols for restricting the use of mobile phones and tablets in basic education schools within a maximum of 180 days. This local initiative follows national guidelines issued by the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP).

The restrictions aim to address concerns regarding students' attention spans during their formative processes, as well as potential negative impacts on their mental, emotional, and social health. The decision is supported by consultations involving teachers, parents, and experts, alongside an evaluation of international experiences.

While basic education levels will face general restrictions during school hours, high school institutions may determine specific actions through local assemblies. Exceptions will be made for students requiring devices for health reasons, special education, or human rights considerations.
