Coahuila universities launch regional heritage and research initiatives
Universities in Coahuila, Mexico, are launching initiatives to promote regional products and preserve cultural heritage.
The Universidad Tecnológica de Coahuila (UTC) is collaborating with the Unión Nacional de Consejos con Denominación de Origen and state agencies to advance research and innovation regarding traditional distillates, specifically sotol. As part of its 2026 Marketing Week, students will explore commercial possibilities for sotol-based products, such as creams and gels. The UTC also plans to establish a new Research Department to support student developments and intellectual property protection.
Separately, the Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila (UAdeC) has announced the third edition of its university contest to rescue intangible heritage. The initiative, titled “¿Donde comen, comen. . . ?”, invites students and staff to document and preserve traditional family recipes from the Coahuila region. Participants must submit recipes along with family anecdotes to help preserve the state's culinary history, with selected works to be included in an electronic publication in 2026.
