Coahuila women face violence from family over property
The Coahuila Secretariat for Women has reported that elderly women are increasingly facing violence from their own children and grandchildren. These aggressions are frequently driven by disputes over housing, properties, and inheritances.
Mayra Valdés González, the Secretary for Women in Coahuila, noted that while violence against older women represents a smaller proportion of the agency's total cases, the perpetrators are often direct family members. In many instances, family members attempt to seize assets or force elderly women out of the homes they have inhabited for most of their lives.
A significant barrier to addressing this issue is the reluctance of elderly victims to report their own relatives due to emotional bonds or cultural patterns. The Secretariat offers psychological support and legal guidance to women of all ages facing violence to help them navigate the reporting and legal processes.
