Coal India diversifies into renewables and critical minerals
Coal India Limited (CIL) is transitioning from a traditional coal mining entity into a diversified organization focused on energy, minerals, materials, and technology. The company’s business development portfolio is organized into five key areas: coal gasification and coal-to-chemicals, thermal power, renewable energy and storage, critical minerals and advanced materials, and diversified minerals including iron ore.
Major ongoing projects include an investment of approximately 69,346 crore rupees across four coal-to-chemical initiatives. Other significant developments include the 2x800 MW Chandrapura ultra-supercritical expansion, roughly 550 MW of operational solar capacity, and grid-level Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
The coal gasification strategy aims to convert coal into synthesis gas to produce synthetic natural gas, ammonia, urea, methanol, and other chemicals, which may reduce import dependency. Key initiatives involve Talcher Fertilizers Limited, Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited, Coal Gas India Limited, and the CIL-BPCL Chandrapura coal-to-SNG project.
