Coalición Vamos approves transition to formal political party

The Vamos Coalition has officially approved a transition from an independent citizen movement to a formal political party. Announced by former deputy and coalition president Juan Diego Vásquez during the group's third assembly, the decision aims to provide the organization with a permanent structure, territorial presence, and decision-making mechanisms to sustain political activity beyond a single electoral cycle.

The move follows the coalition's performance in the 2024 elections, where approximately 30 officials, including deputies and mayors, were elected through independent candidacy. Leadership stated that the transformation is a necessary update to their political tools rather than a change in their core essence.

The announcement has drawn criticism from political opponents. Deputy Luis Eduardo Camacho questioned the consistency of the move, asking, “¿No que los partidos políticos eran los malos?” (Weren't political parties the bad ones?). Other critics and citizens have expressed concerns regarding the group's previous stance against traditional party structures and the use of 'voto plancha' (block voting). Conversely, former President Martín Torrijos Espino expressed support, noting that Panama requires new alternatives.
