Coalition 2026 seeks political consensus ahead of Gambian elections

Coalition 2026 has expressed its willingness to re-engage political parties that previously withdrew from negotiations as the group seeks to build a broader consensus for the 2026 presidential election in The Gambia.

Coalition spokesperson Assan Martin stated that the group remains flexible and that doors will remain open until the nomination process by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). Martin emphasized that the coalition is a long-term political project focused on consensus rather than individual personalities.

Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the flagbearer for Coalition 2026 and leader of the UNITE Party, has called on citizens to reject divisions based on tribe, religion, region, or generation. Bensouda, who also serves as the Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, urged political actors to avoid divisive rhetoric.

Bensouda outlined the coalition’s platform, which includes prioritizing healthcare, employment, economic strengthening, anti-corruption measures, and reducing the cost of living. He described the coalition’s approach as inclusive, aiming to attract supporters from both the ruling party and other opposition groups through a model of servant leadership.
