U.S. heritage groups petition Congress to protect Section 106

A coalition of over 600 organizations, including Tribal Nations, museums, and professional associations, has submitted an open letter to Congress to protect Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield is among the signatories.

The movement responds to proposed changes by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) that would rewrite Section 106 regulations. Advocates argue these changes, alongside potential statutory rollbacks, would reduce protections for historic places and cultural property by limiting the requirement for federal agencies to consult with Tribal Nations and local officials before approving projects that affect heritage sites.
