CoAsia SEMI to develop AI SoCs for LG Electronics' smart home project
CoAsia SEMI has joined the ‘K-on-device AI Home’ project, led by LG Electronics, to develop two types of ultra-low-power AI System-on-Chips (SoC). This initiative is part of a national R&D program by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy aimed at securing domestic AI semiconductor and software technologies for industries such as robotics, defense, and home appliances.
The project focuses on on-device AI, which processes data locally on the device rather than in the cloud. This approach improves real-time responsiveness, enhances privacy, and reduces power consumption and communication burdens. CoAsia SEMI’s specific task involves developing SoCs that support ‘always-on’ perception, allowing devices to sense environmental changes even in standby mode.
The research and development phase is scheduled to run for 54 months, from July 2026 to December 2030, with CoAsia SEMI’s investment totaling approximately 31 billion KRW. The collaboration includes other entities such as HyperAccel, Mobilint, Sogang University, and the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI). The goal is to establish a domestic AI semiconductor supply chain and reduce reliance on foreign cloud infrastructure and semiconductors.
