Coastal cleanup efforts reported in Venezuela and Mexico
In Venezuela, a national sanitation campaign held for World Beach Day resulted in the collection of over 56 tons of waste across various coastal states. The initiative involved more than 21,000 participants, including volunteers and public servants. Plastic was the most prevalent material, accounting for 51.7% of the total weight. Cleanup efforts were concentrated in states such as Miranda, Falcón, Carabobo, Sucre, Anzoátegui, Nueva Esparta, and Zulia. The campaign also included mangrove reforestation in Morrocoy National Park and the release of 250 seahorses in Mochima National Park.
In Mexico, the civil association Proyecto Kayam AC conducts monthly cleanup operations along the Veracruz coastline. These systematic efforts involve groups of 40 to 50 volunteers who collect between 30 and 60 kilograms of waste per session. Coordinator Antonio Cano reported that the debris includes PET, glass, tires, and hazardous items such as syringes, highlighting the environmental and public safety risks posed by improper waste disposal.
