Coastal erosion and industrial waste concerns reported in Brazil

In Campos dos Goytacazes, heavy storm surges have intensified coastal erosion in the Farol de São Tomé region. The erosion has damaged access roads along the coast near Barra do Furado, causing a truck to become stuck on Friday. The Municipal Civil Defense is coordinating with various departments, including traffic and public works, to monitor the area, signal risks, and manage traffic. Authorities have warned drivers, particularly those in large vehicles like buses and trucks, to avoid unsafe sections.

In Salvador, activists and residents are raising concerns regarding environmental impacts at São Tomé de Paripe beach. Following the closure of a Gerdau steel plant, critics allege that industrial residues, including metallic fragments and slag, remain in the sand and soil. Environmental groups argue that the lack of complete cleanup poses risks to marine biodiversity and the safety of swimmers and local fishermen. While Gerdau maintains a commitment to environmental standards, local leaders are calling for stricter monitoring by state and municipal environmental agencies.
