Coastal erosion causes infrastructure damage in Mazatlán and Boca del Río
Strong waves and heavy swells have caused significant structural damage to coastal infrastructure in Mazatlán and Boca del Río. In Mazatlán, two sinkholes totaling approximately 160 meters in length have appeared along the Malecón on Avenida del Mar. Officials from the Department of Public Works stated that these sinkholes resulted from foundation failures in the retaining walls, which succumbed to the force of the waves. Additionally, a damaged access ramp at Playa Norte requires demolition and reconstruction due to severe erosion and exposed steel reinforcement.
In Boca del Río, Mayor Maryjose Gamboa reported that intense wave action has eroded the boulevard, breaking pavement and washing away sediment. The municipality has submitted a project for the construction of new breakwaters to mitigate wave impact but noted that they require federal funding to execute the project, as local resources are insufficient for an undertaking of this scale.
