Coastal erosion in My Thuy, Quang Tri forces urgent evacuations
Severe coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion are occurring in My Thuy village, My Thuy commune, Quang Tri province. Recent heavy rains, tropical depressions, and high tides have caused approximately 500 meters of coastline to erode, with some sections receding more than 15 meters inland.
The erosion has damaged coastal concrete roads, causing cracks and subsidence, and has destroyed lighting systems, wells, and aquaculture ponds used for shrimp and snail farming. Twelve businesses at the beach have been urgently evacuated, and dozens of other households are facing displacement. Local residents have expressed concerns that the erosion is linked to the implementation of the My Thuy Port Area Project and sand mining activities rather than natural disasters alone.
Local authorities have indicated that they are working on land clearance and compensation plans to relocate affected residents to resettlement areas. Currently, efforts are focused on protecting the lives and property of those in the high-risk zones.
