Following storm-related slips and ground instability in 2023, both existing staircases remain closed. The council is considering whether to replace the eastern staircase, create alternative access, or permanently decommission the structure. Further assessments by geotechnical engineers and arborists are planned to determine if the western staircase can safely reopen.

In Australia, the Sutherland Shire Council has paused plans for a new concrete disability access ramp at the Shelly Beach Ocean Pool due to significant community unrest. Regular swimmers expressed concerns that the proposed structure would alter the pool’s tidal flow and create safety risks in rough seas. The council has decided to establish a stakeholder reference group to refine the design and explore alternative options, with a follow-up report expected in October 2026.
