Coastal regions face high surf and rip current risks

High surf advisories and dangerous ocean conditions are affecting multiple coastal regions. In Hawaii, Hurricane Nolo is generating swells that have triggered a high surf advisory for southeast-facing shores of the Big Island. Advisory-level surf is also expected along the east-facing shores of Maui, Molokai, Oahu, and Kauai, though conditions are expected to diminish late Sunday as the hurricane moves away.

Along the Jersey Shore, a high risk of life-threatening rip currents is in effect through Sunday evening. Forecasts indicate large breaking waves between 1 and 6 feet in the surf zone, with seas reaching 8 to 11 feet. Strong north winds with gusts up to 50 knots are expected, and inexperienced swimmers are advised to remain out of the water due to the dangerous conditions.
