Coastal villages offer unique scenery along Portugal's Atlantic coast

Portugal's Atlantic coast features unique coastal villages that offer distinct scenic and cultural experiences.

Azenhas do Mar, located in the Sintra region northwest of Lisbon, is characterized by white houses with red roofs built vertically onto steep cliffs. The village, whose name refers to historic water mills, maintains a connection to its fishing roots and features an ocean pool situated at the base of the cliffs.

Costa Nova, located approximately 50 miles south of Porto near the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, is known for its colorful striped fishermen's cottages called palheiros. This community of roughly 1,200 residents retains a traditional fishing atmosphere and offers a milder Atlantic climate compared to other parts of Europe.
