Coastal water contamination reported in Alagoas and Bahia
Environmental monitoring reports indicate significant water contamination affecting several coastal areas in Brazil. In Alagoas, the Institute of the Environment (IMA/AL) reported that eight out of 68 analyzed beach sections are unfit for swimming. The affected areas include five sections in Maceió, specifically at Pajuçara, Ponta Verde, and Jatiúca, as well as three sections in Maragogi on the North Coast.
In Bahia, the Institute of the Environment and Water Resources (Inema) identified 30 points along the Salvador coastline as unfit for bathing. These contaminated locations span well-known beaches such as Porto da Barra, Itapuã, Farol da Barra, Rio Vermelho, and Piatã.
Authorities recommend that swimmers exercise caution, particularly near river mouths, canals, streams, or areas experiencing algae blooms, even in sections classified as safe.
