Regional environmental and economic updates across Mexico and Veracruz
Various regional initiatives are addressing environmental management and economic shifts. In Tulum, Mexico, a tourism crisis has caused monthly solid waste collection to drop from 8,000 tons to approximately 3,000 tons, a decline attributed to low hotel occupancy and sargassum seaweed issues.
In Veracruz, the Subcomité Veracruzano de Promoción Artesanal has approved the call for the 2026 Annual Veracruzano Artisan Award to support the local craft economy. Similarly, Nezahualcóyotl has joined the Recicla-ON program to manage electronic waste and protect water resources.
Other environmental efforts include Semarnat’s “Gol por el Ambiente” campaign, which exceeded its plastic recycling goal by recovering over 644 kilograms. In San Pedro Cholula, the EcoCholula program continues to promote the separation of PET, glass, and aluminum, while residents in the Cañón Rosarito conducted a large-scale cleaning operation to maintain the ecotourism route.
