Cobra 600 jet-powered UAV completes successful first flight test

German defense contractors Diehl Defence and POLARIS Raumflugzeuge have successfully conducted the first flight test of the Cobra 600, a reusable jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The test flight, which covered approximately 20km over the Baltic Sea in late August 2026, focused on the base vehicle and did not include a weapon payload.

The Cobra 600 is designed as part of the Airborne Launching and Attack System programme. It is intended to carry IRIS-T air-to-air missiles to provide a cost-effective, distributed air defense system. By launching interceptors from a drone closer to a threat, the system aims to increase effective range compared to traditional ground-based launchers.

Future testing will focus on integrating the IRIS-T missile and establishing secure command links for target detection and engagement. Developers are also considering the use of satellite internet modules, such as Starlink, to maintain communication in long-distance or electronic warfare environments. The UAV has a takeoff weight of 600kg and an estimated combat range of approximately 400km.
