Coca Codo Sinclair increases output to 64% of Ecuador's hydroelectric generation

The Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant significantly increased its electricity production following a sharp rise in river flow. On Thursday, October 22, 2026, the facility produced an average of 861 megawatts (MW), accounting for 64% of Ecuador's total hydroelectric generation during that period, according to the National Electricity Operator (Cenace).

The surge follows a substantial increase in water flow, which peaked at 759 cubic meters per second (m³/s) on Wednesday night, compared to an average of 148 m³/s on Tuesday. This increase helps stabilize the national power system after recent difficulties caused by reduced water levels in other regions.

As a run-of-the-river hydroelectric plant, Coca Codo Sinclair's output is highly dependent on real-time water flow rather than large-scale storage. While it has an installed capacity of 1,500 MW and a small regulating reservoir for peak demand, it lacks the massive storage capabilities of the Paute Integral complex, such as the Mazar reservoir. Recent rainfall has also benefited the Mazar reservoir, aiding overall national generation.
