Coca-Cola warns of administrative burden from proposed sugar tax

Coca-Cola Germany head John Galvin has warned that a proposed sugar tax would create an ‘administrative nightmare’ for both manufacturers and retailers. The company argues that the tax would require complex classification of beverages, meticulous documentation of quantities, and intensive calculation of tax amounts.

Galvin noted that the tax would likely lead to higher prices for consumers and could jeopardize jobs, particularly in retail where mixed beverage crates would require individual bottle calculations. He criticized the move, stating that the industry has already voluntarily reduced sugar content and that the state should not dictate dietary choices. The tax, which is not yet finalized, is planned for introduction in 2027 under proposals from Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil.
