Coca-Cola’s “Coke” Nickname and Original Coca Leaf Ingredient Explained

The original 1886 Coca‑Cola formula created by Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton included an extract of the coca leaf. The extract is processed to remove the cocaine alkaloid, a step performed for over a century by the U.S. firm Stepan Company, allowing the flavor to remain without the drug’s psychoactive effects.

The shortened name “Coke” emerged organically as a colloquial nickname and was later embraced by the Coca‑Cola Company. Marketing pioneer Asa Griggs Candler helped popularise the beverage, and the brand now recognises “Coke” as an official shorthand for its flagship product worldwide.
