Cocampo questions viability of 17,000 public land parcels for farmers

A study by Cocampo has raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of the Spanish government's plan to provide 17,000 public land parcels to young farmers, women, and new professionals. The analysis of 16,485 rustic properties reveals that the majority are too small to be economically viable, with a median size of only 0.42 hectares and 76.4% measuring less than one hectare.

Beyond size constraints, the report highlights a lack of critical data regarding soil quality, water availability, and irrigation capabilities. Cocampo notes that many of these properties have been offered in various government calls over the last decade with little success, suggesting that the primary challenge is not just information access, but the legal regularization and grouping of small plots into larger, profitable holdings.
