Bolivian Blockades Threaten Poultry Production and Food Supply

After more than 48 days of road blockades led by campesino and cocalero groups, Bolivia faces a severe disruption to its poultry sector and food distribution. The blockades have halted the normal movement of chickens and feed, breaking the production cycle and prompting the Association of Avian Producers (ADA) of Cochabamba to warn of a forthcoming shortage of chicken in markets. Producers report losses exceeding US$400 million and the loss of millions of birds destined for meat and egg production.

The protests also affect vegetable supplies, as a renewed blockade at Río Abajo has cut off a key supply route to La Paz, driving up grocery prices. Authorities estimate dozens of road points remain blocked across five departments, with 48 active blockades at the latest count. The combined impact threatens both consumer access to affordable protein and the financial stability of poultry enterprises.

Union leaders and government officials have called for negotiations, but the protest groups have rejected dialogue until the release of detained union leaders, prolonging the stalemate and sustaining the supply pressures.
