Cochin International Airport announces infrastructure and cargo expansion

Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is undertaking significant infrastructure upgrades as part of a new 25-year master plan. The airport will implement Bridge-Mounted Equipment (BME) to provide electrical power and conditioned air directly to parked aircraft. This Rs 15.04 crore project includes ten 90 kVA Ground Power Units and ten 90 TR Pre-Conditioned Air units, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 122 to 145 kg per hour of operation by minimizing reliance on aircraft Auxiliary Power Units and diesel generators.

Additionally, CIAL plans to develop a next-generation cargo village to enhance handling, storage, and supply-chain efficiency. Jacobs Solutions India Pvt Ltd has been appointed to prepare the business and development plan for this expansion at a cost of Rs 7.84 crore. The master plan will also evaluate the feasibility of a second runway and the potential extension of the existing runway to accommodate Code E aircraft. Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan noted that CIAL currently handles 60% of the state’s air cargo, with cargo value increasing 29% to Rs 5,647.76 crore in 2025-26.
