Cochoapa residents protest budget cuts in Ometepec
Residents of Cochoapa held a protest on Tuesday, August 17, marching to and blocking the entrance of the Ometepec City Hall in Guerrero, Mexico. The demonstration was triggered by a 4 million peso reduction in the budget allocated for public works in their locality.
According to protesters, the budget for 2026 was set at 7.5 million pesos, a significant drop from the 11.5 million pesos assigned in 2025. Demonstrators used chains and padlocks to secure the government building entrance, demanding that the previous year's funding levels be respected. Local council members Deisy Benito Morales and Joaquín Domínguez expressed support for the residents and pledged to assist in resolving the dispute. Mayor Rigoberto Chacón is expected to address the matter personally.
