Cockroach Infestation Risk in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Institute for Health and Food Safety Zenica (INZ) has warned that cockroach infestations are becoming increasingly common in homes and other premises across Bosnia and Herzegovina. The insects can mechanically transmit agents of infectious diseases and their excreta, shed skins and body parts may trigger or worsen allergic reactions and respiratory problems, especially for children, the elderly and people with asthma.
INZ advises a set of preventive measures: keep food in sealed containers, avoid leaving food residues or open pet‑food dishes overnight, regularly clean under and behind kitchen appliances, maintain clean basements, corridors and waste‑storage areas, eliminate unnecessary cardboard boxes, empty trash bins frequently, remove moisture sources, repair water leaks, clean drains and seal cracks in walls, floors and around installations. Consistent hygiene and proper disinfection are presented as the most effective way to curb the spread of cockroaches and protect public health.
