Cockroaches Exhibit Collective Memory via Social Networks, Study Shows
Biologists have found that cockroach colonies develop a shared “collective memory” that is stored in the group’s social structure rather than in individual insects. In experiments with American cockroaches, groups repeatedly chose a preferred shelter even after the lighting conditions were swapped, indicating that the colony’s previous decision persisted despite a permanent environmental change. The research, led by social ecologist Mariano Calvo Martín at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, shows that tactile contact and pheromone trails create a decentralized network that guides collective navigation. Findings could improve pest‑control strategies by targeting the colony’s social cohesion and inspire swarm‑robotics algorithms that mimic insect‑like memory without a central controller.
