Coco Gauff condemns racist abuse after China Open controversy
American tennis star Coco Gauff has reported receiving an “insane” amount of racist abuse and direct messages on social media following a controversial moment during her China Open third-round match in Beijing.
During her 7-5, 6-1 victory over Chinese teenager Sun Xinran, Gauff halted play in the first set to signal that flickering LED advertising boards were causing a visual distraction. Following a video review, the chair umpire ruled that the point should be replayed. While Gauff won the replayed point and eventually the match, the decision sparked intense online backlash, with some fans accusing her of cheating.
Gauff defended her actions on X, stating, “You can dislike me or disagree about what happened without being racist,” and emphasizing, “I’m not a cheater or a thief.” She noted that the rules allow players to challenge points due to such hindrances. Gauff also expressed sympathy for Sun, describing her as an “incredible talent” and apologizing for the situation.
Tennis legend Boris Becker offered public support for Gauff, encouraging her to ignore the comments from “ignorant, stupid people.” The incident highlights ongoing issues regarding online harassment in professional sports, with the WTA previously noting a rise in abusive social media posts directed at players.
