Cocoa production expands across Brazil's Mato Grosso and Bahia regions

Cocoa production is expanding in Brazil, with significant developments in both Mato Grosso and Bahia. In Mato Grosso, cocoa is emerging as a way for rural producers to diversify income. While currently concentrated in the northwest, research and technical assistance are driving expansion into municipalities such as Juína, Cotriguaçu, and Nova Bandeirantes. According to IBGE, Mato Grosso produced 471 tons of cocoa in 2022. Producers note that high domestic demand and the availability of adapted varieties from Ceplac provide strong economic potential.

In Bahia, which accounts for approximately 42.4% of Brazil's cocoa production, the focus is on increasing productivity through technology and sustainable practices. IBGE estimates that Brazilian cocoa production could reach 324,200 tons by 2026. Experts emphasize the importance of continuous nutritional management to combat challenges posed by heavy rainfall and dry spells, which can affect nutrient availability and cause losses of nitrogen and potassium in the soil.
