Coconut water market expands in Dominican Republic

Coconut water consumption and availability are expanding across the Dominican Republic, appearing in streets, markets, supermarkets, and highways. Approximately ten industries are currently involved in processing and packaging the beverage, according to Hecmilio Galván, director general of the Fondo Especial para el Desarrollo Agropecuario (FEDA).

The growth is driven by increased product availability and a rising consumer interest in healthy, nutritional alternatives. This trend is particularly notable among younger populations focused on fitness and nutrition. Beyond industrial bottling and canning, supermarkets have also expanded their offerings to include peeled coconuts.

Osmar Benítez, president of the Junta Agroindustrial Dominicana, noted the sector's significant economic potential, suggesting that the country could reach up to $300 million in coconut exports if development is prioritized. Medical experts highlight the drink's nutritional value, specifically its electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and magnesium, though they advise caution for individuals with specific medical conditions, such as kidney disease.
