Coconut water vs. energy drinks for hydration

Coconut water is a suitable option for hydration following moderate sweating or light physical activity due to its natural content of potassium, magnesium, and calcium. However, because it contains limited sodium, it is not recommended for treating severe dehydration caused by vomiting or diarrhea. In such medical cases, oral rehydration solutions are preferred as they provide precise ratios of sodium, glucose, and electrolytes.

Energy drinks are not designed for fluid replacement. They typically contain caffeine, sugar, and stimulants that may provide a temporary sense of energy without restoring necessary fluid and salt balances. Excessive consumption of energy drinks has been linked to increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and heart rhythm disturbances, particularly in individuals predisposed to cardiac issues. For standard daily hydration, plain water remains sufficient for most people.
