Colombia establishes biocultural network to protect rivers
On 15‑16 August, the municipality of Honda in Tolima will host the III Encuentro Ciudadanos del Río, bringing together community leaders, researchers, artists, ancestral knowledge keepers, fishers, cultural managers and environmental organisations. The highlight of the meeting is the launch of the Red Biocultural Ciudadanos del Río, a network that will combine traditional river‑related knowledge with modern conservation approaches.
The network, led by CoCreá, will include national and international partners such as WWF, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Tropenbos, alongside academic institutions and local collectives. Planned activities feature panels, workshops, artistic exhibitions, river tours and dialogues on artisanal fishing, ecosystem restoration, ecotourism, traditional cuisine and cultural celebrations, aiming to address climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation across Colombia’s rivers, wetlands and mangroves.
