Codacons warns of holiday scams and rising travel debt in Italy

The Italian consumer protection association Codacons has launched an initiative to collect reports regarding travel-related service failures and scams following the summer holiday season. The association is encouraging travelers to report issues such as significant flight cancellations or delays, railway service disruptions, and accommodations that do not match their advertisements.

Codacons is also focusing on fraudulent activities, specifically regarding non-existent or misrepresented holiday rentals. The association notes that approximately 4 million citizens in Italy have been victims of holiday-related scams, representing a global turnover of 22 billion euros.

Additionally, Codacons has issued a warning regarding the rise of 'holiday debt,' where consumers finance vacations through loans and deferred payment plans. The association cautions that while monthly installments may appear affordable, consumers must carefully evaluate the total cost of the loan, interest rates, and the long-term impact on family budgets to avoid future financial tension.
