Code Béluga project uses genomics to study Saint Lawrence biodiversity

The Code Béluga project, a collaborative citizen science initiative led by Genome Québec and the Biodôme de Montréal, has concluded its 2025 sampling operation along the Saint Lawrence River. The project engaged approximately 500 participants across five sites, ranging from Rimouski to La Malbaie and Tadoussac.

During a 12-day sampling period, researchers collected 800 samples totaling 125 liters of water. Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis revealed the presence of 80 different organisms in the estuary, including belugas, fin whales, beavers, moose, and copepods. The non-invasive method allows for biodiversity research without disturbing the local ecosystem.

Geneviève Dupéré of the Biodôme noted that the use of eDNA helps demystify genomics and sparks public curiosity. The findings from the project will be featured in programming at the Biodôme starting in the spring of 2027.
