Codebase Management Strategies in Large JavaScript Monorepos

Managing large JavaScript codebases, particularly within monorepos, presents challenges regarding code isolation and determining the importance of specific packages. One method for isolating new code from legacy code is through linting, which enforces rules ranging from formatting to asynchronous code handling. Linting can be implemented during development within an IDE, at commit-time via pre-commit hooks, or on CI servers.

However, integration can lead to performance issues. For instance, TypeScript-TSLint plugins may cause language servers to slow down or run out of memory. Additionally, pre-commit hooks can be slow if the linter must restart and re-typecheck code every time. Using long-running processes, such as eslint_d, can mitigate startup costs by communicating via sockets.

Another aspect of managing large repositories is assessing a package's footprint. Beyond simple dependency declarations in package.json, importance can be measured by analyzing actual file imports, the volume of code within a package, and the frequency of changes relative to its usage. These metrics help developers understand the weight and impact of specific internal packages.
