Codelco and Lundin Mining boost student training programs in northern Chile

Codelco launched the "Escuela de Jóvenes Líderes para la Minería" in the northern mining region, investing 120 million Chilean pesos to mentor students from eight local high schools and the State Technical Training Center in Calama. The program pairs miners with students for year‑long mentorship, exposing them to technical areas of mining and career pathways.

Separately, a group of final‑year metallurgy students from the Universidad de Atacama visited Lundin Mining’s Candelaria concentrator. Guided by company engineers, they toured the control room, milling and flotation circuits, and received safety and technical briefings. The visit, integrated into a university course, is reported to improve graduate employability, with studies indicating a 40 % reduction in on‑job learning time for participants.

Both initiatives illustrate an expanding collaboration between Chile’s mining firms and regional educational institutions to develop a skilled workforce aligned with industry safety and digitalisation standards.
