Codelco evaluates workforce reductions amid new recruitment efforts
Codelco, one of the world's largest copper producers, is currently navigating significant organizational shifts. The state-owned company is evaluating a potential workforce reduction of between 5% and 20% as part of a recovery plan led by its new administration. This review aims to address stagnant production levels and rising operational costs. While no final decision has been made, the measure could primarily impact contract workers, who make up approximately 80% of the company's 77,000 linked positions.
Possible strategies to manage the workforce include closing or selling less profitable operations and postponing certain projects to ease financial pressure. The diagnostic process, overseen by executives including Jorge Gómez, may extend into late 2026. The Federation of Copper Workers (FTC) has stated it has received no formal notification regarding these plans and maintains that current staffing levels meet operational needs.
Simultaneously, Codelco is actively recruiting for various roles across Chile. Open positions include engineering, production, and maintenance roles in regions such as Antofagasta, Atacama, Valparaíso, O’Higgins, and the Metropolitan Region. These vacancies range from operational mine and plant roles to corporate management and student internship programs.
