El Teniente mine landslide kills two contract workers in Chile

Two contract workers have died following a landslide at Codelco’s El Teniente mine in Chile’s O’Higgins Region. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon near the ADIT 42 area in the Rajo Sur sector.

The victims, identified as Guillermo Guajardo López, 53, and Diego Ponce Ponce, 34, were employees of the subcontractor San Lorenzo, providing services to Aura Ingeniería. The workers were traveling in a vehicle performing inspection and road clearing duties when they were struck by a massive slide of snow, mud, and rock caused by extreme weather and heavy rains.

A third worker was successfully rescued from the site and transported to a medical facility for treatment. Following the accident, Sernageomin ordered the immediate suspension of all operations in the Rajo Sur sector.

The Public Ministry and the Investigative Police (PDI) have launched an investigation to determine if safety protocols were followed and to establish the exact cause of the deaths. Codelco has expressed condolences to the families and stated that its priority remains supporting those affected by the emergency.
